Judge Ute Wolff Lally - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Ute Wolff Lally (Ret.) was a justice of the Nassau County Supreme Court in the Tenth Judicial District of New York. She was elected to the Supreme Court in 1996. Lally retired in 2011.

Her judicial career began in 1986 when she was elected to serve as a judge for the Nassau County District Court. She remained on the District Court bench until 1995.

Lally received a B.A. in mathematics from Hunter College in 1962. She went on to earn a J.D. from New York Law School in 1972.

Prior to joining the judiciary, she was a partner at Lally & Lally (1973 to 1985), where she practiced alongside her husband.

She was appointed to serve on the Joint Committee on Grievances for the Tenth Judicial District, the Nassau County Industrial Development Agency (chairperson and board member), the Long Island and Nassau County Development Corp. (trustee), and the American Red Cross (board of directors).

Lally was also a member of the Nassau County Bar Association, the Nassau County Women’s Bar Association, the Academy of Law-Judicial Council, the American Council on Germany Supreme Court Judges Association, and the National Association of Women Judges.

Some of her many honors have included being named Woman of the Year by the FDNY Steuben Association (2008) and the Fraternal Order of Court Officers (2007). Lally also received the DeWitt Clinton Masonic Award (2001) and the Officer’s Cross of Merit, First Class, from the Republic of Germany (2001).

Lally came to America as a child refugee from war-torn Germany. She and her husband Lawrence, a Long Island native, met and married in 1956.

After retiring from the bench, she became a neutral at Settlement Systems Arbitration & Mediation (SSAM).
