Judge Stacey M. Romeo - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Stacey M. Romeo is a judge for the Monroe County Family Court in the Seventh Judicial District of New York. She was elected to the bench in 2017.

Romeo earned a B.A. in English from Niagara University in 1991. She then completed an M.P.A. from Syracuse University in 1992, earning a certificate in Gerontology, Health Policy, and Public Affairs. She continued her studies at Syracuse University College of Law, where she received a J.D. in 1996.

After graduating from law school, Romeo worked as an editor for Westlaw and LexisNexis from 1997 to 1998. At that time, she joined the Law Office of Thomas D. Cook, where she worked briefly as an associate. Then, in 1999, Romeo started her own private practice as a sole practitioner. She worked in that capacity until 2005, when she started working as an attorney at Romeo & Schmitt. Over the course of this legal career, Romeo specialized in family law matters.

Romeo supplemented this private practice work with service as a town attorney. She first served with the Town of Irondequoit from 1999 to 2005. She then moved to the Town of Pittsford, performing a brief stint from 2006 to 2007.

Just prior to her election to the bench, Romeo served as a principal law clerk for the Hon. Gail A. Donofrio, first with the Monroe County Family Court and then with the Monroe County Supreme Court. As a law clerk, Romeo sat as a domestic violence hearing office, a small claims hearing officer, a foreclosure referee, and a matrimonial referee from 2011 to 2016.

Her memberships have included the Italian Women’s Civic Club, the Italian Sports Club, the Italian American Community Center, and the Greater Rochester Soap Box Derby. She has also served as president of the Kiwanis Club of Irondequoit and as committee chair of the Christ the King School’s Advisory Committee.
