Judge Scott M. Brownell: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Scott M. Brownell (Ret.) was a judge for the 12th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida in Manatee County. He was elected to the bench in 1986. Brownell retired in 2016, after which time he presided for two years as a senior judge.


He received a B.A. from Eckerd College in 1971. Brownell went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Florida, Fredric G. Levin College of Law, in 1974.


Prior to beginning his judicial career, he spent the bulk of his legal career in private practice. After graduating from law school, Brownell opened his own private solo practice and worked in that capacity until 1980. He later practiced as a partner at Brownell & Farrance, P.A. (1980 to 1984) and Harllee, Porges, Hamlin & Brownell (1984 to 1986). His practice focused on commercial and construction litigation.


Following his retirement, Brownell became a mediator at his own mediation firm.
