Judge Rochelle T. Curley - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Rochelle T. Curley is a judge for the 12th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida in Sarasota County. She was elected to the bench in 2006.

The 12th Judicial Circuit includes DeSoto, Manatee, and Sarasota Counties. Curley has presided over the Criminal Felony IV Division and the Early Childhood Court, a voluntary diversion program that seeks to expedite the path to permanency for children under the age of three.

Prior to her election, Curley was an attorney at Shapiro, Goldman & Babboni in Sarasota, where she handled personal injury cases. Before that, she spent three years as a staff attorney for Allstate (2001 to 2004).

She received a B.A. in business administration from the University of Oklahoma in 1987. Curley went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Oklahoma College of Law in 1993. She was admitted to practice in Florida in 1994.

After graduating from law school, Curley began her legal career as an assistant state attorney with the Office of the State Attorney for the Twelfth Judicial Circuit in Sarasota. She served in that capacity until 2001, prosecuting misdemeanor, felony, domestic violence, and juvenile cases.

Her memberships have included the National Association of Women Judges, the Sarasota County Bar Association, and the Florida Association of Women Lawyers.

From a civic standpoint, Curley was involved with the Women’s Leadership Council, the Boys and Girls Club of Sarasota County (board member), the Southwest Women’s Alliance, and the International Women’s Forum.

Curley, who was born in North Carolina, is the youngest of five children. Growing up, her father served for over twenty years in the military, during which time the family lived in various places including Japan and New Mexico. After her father retired, they settled in Oklahoma. Her mother is Japanese. Curley and her husband, August, a banker, have two children.
