Judge Robert K. Groeb - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Robert K. Groeb is a judge for the 8th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Rick Scott in 2011, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of the Hon. Robert P. Cate.

The 8th Judicial Circuit encompasses Alachua County, Baker County, Bradford County, Gilchrist County, Levy County, and Union County. Groeb has held assignments in Alachua, Gilchrist, and Levy Counties, presiding over cases in the Juvenile Delinquency Division, the Mental Health Division, and the Juvenile Dependency Division. He has served as the administrative judge for the Family Division, handling all Hague Convention cases in Alachua County.

Prior to his appointment, Groeb was a judge for the Alachua County Court in the 8th Judicial Circuit, a position to which he was named in 2010. Before that, he was a sole practitioner in his own private practice (1999 to 2010) and assistant general counsel with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (1998 to 1999).

He received a B.A. from Michigan State University in 1981. Groeb went on to earn a J.D. from Stetson University College of Law in 1984.

After graduating from law school, Groeb began his legal career as an assistant state attorney in the Office of the State Attorney for the 12th Judicial Circuit (1985 to 1988), the 19th Judicial Circuit (1988 to 1989), the 6th Judicial Circuit (1990 to 1991), and the 8th Judicial Circuit (1991 to 1995). During this time, he performed a brief stint as an attorney in the Law Firm of Robert E. Merchant, III (1989 to 1990) before opening his own private practice as a sole practitioner in 1995.

He was born in Saline, Michigan.
