Judge Robert A. Pell - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Robert A. Pell is a judge for the Clay County Superior Court in Indiana. He was elected to the seat in 2018.

Prior to his election, Pell served as the Clay County Prosecutor.

He first joined the bench as a judge for the Clay County Circuit Court in 2005, after receiving an appointment to the bench by former Governor Mitch Daniels, though his time in the position was brief. The following year, Pell was defeated in his bid for election to retain the seat.

Prior to his appointment, he worked for twenty-one years in private practice in Clay County and spent more than fourteen years as a chief deputy prosecutor (1982 to 1987 and 1995 to 2005). As a prosecutor, Pell handled child support and domestic violence cases, and in private practice, he represented the Harrison Township Trustee, the Town of Harmony, and the Town of Carbon. He was also a public defender.

He received a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in 1977. Pell went on to complete a J.D. at Indiana University, Robert H. McKinney School of Law in 1980.

He was admitted to practice in Florida (1980), Indiana (1981), and the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana (1981).

After graduating from law school, Pell worked as a court bailiff and practiced in Florida before returning to Clay County in 1982.

He is a past president of the Clay Community Parks Association and the Clay County Bar Association. Pell is also a co-founder of the board of Habitat for Humanity of Clay County. In addition, he chaired the Brazil Board of Zoning Appeals and the Brazil Plan Commission and has been a member of the Brazil Rotary.

Pell was born and raised in Brazil, Indiana, where he attended Brazil High School.

He is registered as a Republican.
