Judge Rex M. Barbas - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Rex M. Barbas (Ret.) was a judge for the 13th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida in Hillsborough County. He was elected to the bench in 1996. Barbas retired in 2023.

During his judicial tenure, he held assignments in the Family Law, Criminal, Juvenile Dependency, Juvenile Delinquency, and Civil Divisions. Barbas also served as an Administrative Judge of the General Civil Division.

He received a B.A. from Loyola University in 1972. Barbas went on to complete a J.D. at Loyola University New Orleans College of Law in 1975. While attending law school, he served as a law clerk at the Law Offices of Frank J. Varela.

Barbas began his legal career as an assistant state attorney with the Office of the State Attorney for the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit, where he held assignments in the Traffic, Misdemeanor, and Felony Divisions and was chief of the White-Collar Crime Division.

Then, after leaving the office in 1980, Barbas entered private practice, joining the law firm of Anderson, Thorn, Grose & Quesada, P.A. He practiced as an associate there for one year. He then became a founding partner at Mitcham, Weed, Barbas, Allen & Morgan. Early on, his areas of practice included criminal law, real estate and related business litigation law, and personal injury and wrongful death cases. Later, his practice expanded to include complex civil and criminal litigation involving security fraud, bank fraud, murder, contracts, real estate, construction litigation, and professional malpractice. Barbas remained with the firm until assuming the bench.

He has taught various subjects as an adjunct professor at the University of Phoenix's MBA program and Undergraduate Liberal Arts College, Nova Southeast University, the University of Tampa, the University of South Florida, and Hillsborough Community College. Barbas also served as an instructor at the Tampa Police Academy on the subject of the preparation and execution of search warrants.
