Judge Michael J. Hooi - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Michael J. Hooi is a judge for the Hillsborough County Court in Florida. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Ron DeSantis on September 16, 2021, filling a new vacancy created by the Florida Legislature.

Prior to his appointment, Hooi was an associate at Stichter, Riedel, Blain & Postler, a law firm he joined in 2009. During his tenure there, he represented creditors and debtors in corporate and consumer bankruptcies, out-of-court workouts, and alternatives to bankruptcy. Before that, he spent time as a law clerk and a staff attorney to the Hon. Charles R. Wilson of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

Hooi earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Vanderbilt University in 2005. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Florida, Fredric G. Levin College of Law in 2008. As a law student, Hooi was the managing editor of the Florida Law Review.

He is admitted to practice in Florida (2009), the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, and the United States District Court for the Northern, Middle, and Southern Districts of Florida.

Hooi is a descendant of Chinese immigrants. His paternal grandfather emigrated with his family from China and served in the United States Army during the Second World War. His mother is a naturalized Chinese-American citizen from Indonesia. When not presiding over legal proceedings, Hooi enjoys volunteering at non-profit organizations and his church.
