Judge Mark H. Jones - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Mark H. Jones is a judge for the 16th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida in Monroe County. He was elected to the bench in 1996.

During his judicial tenure, Jones served two terms as the Chief Judge of the 16th Judicial Circuit.

He received a B.A. in English from Dartmouth College in 1976. Jones then completed a J.D. at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law in 1979.

Shortly after graduating from law school, he joined the United States Navy, where he served as a lieutenant in the Judge Advocate General Corps (1980 to 1984). During that time, Jones was stationed at the Naval Air Station in Key West, Florida, where he served as an assistant officer in charge of the Naval Legal Service Office Detachment. He was honorably discharged in 1984 and is the recipient of the Naval Humanitarian Service Medal.

Jones began his civilian legal career as an associate at Morgan & Hendrick, P.A. He maintained his practice there until 1986, but would return to the firm for two brief stints in 1988 and again in 1990. Jones also served as an assistant public defender with the Office of the Public Defender for the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit beginning in 1988 to March 1990 and from July 1990 until his election to the Circuit Court in 1996.

He has been involved with the American Legion, Post #0154, the Shared Services Network Executive Roundtable, and the Key West Sunrise Rotary Club. Jones was also a board member of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Monroe County.

He attended Amherst Central High School in New York.
