The Hon. Mark D. Thomas is an associate judge for the Washington County District Court in Maryland. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Robert Ehrlich on June 5, 2006.
Thomas has held assignments on the Judicial Ethics Committee of the Maryland Judicial Conference and the Speciality Courts & Dockets Committee of the Maryland Judicial Council.
Prior to his appointment, Thomas was a stockholder at Meyers, Young, Grove & Thomas, a law firm he joined in 1990. Before that, he spent time as an associate at Miles & Stockbridge (1988 to 1989). Thomas supplemented his practice with part-time service as an assistant state’s attorney with the Washington County State’s Attorney’s Office (1999 to 2006).
Thomas earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Duke University (1980) and a master’s degree in teaching from Brown University (1981). He spent the next year working as an English teacher at Bishop Chatard High School in Indianapolis before completing a J.D. at Indiana University Maurer School of Law in 1986.
He is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania (1987) and Maryland (1987).
After graduating from law school, Thomas began his legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. Patrick D. Sullivan of the Indiana Court of Appeals. He served in that capacity until 1986, at which time he became a law clerk (1986 to 1987) and an associate (1987 to 1988) at Strite, Schildt & Varner.
His memberships have included the Maryland State Bar Association, the Washington County Bar Association, the Maryland State’s Attorneys’ Association, and the Maryland Bar Foundation. He sat on the Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity of Washington County, the Advisory Board of Oak Hill House, and the Washington County Republican Central Committee.
He was named Outstanding Young Marylander of Washington County by the Hagerstown Jaycees (1992).
Thomas was born in Hagerstown, Maryland. He has attended St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, St. John’s Episcopal Parish, and the Disciples of Christ First Christian Church.
