Judge Margaret E. Barnes - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Margaret E. Barnes (Ret.) served as a judge for the 367th District Court in Denton County, Texas. Barnes was appointed to the bench by former Governor Rick Perry in 2010, filling a vacancy created by the elevation of the Hon. Lee Gabriel to the Texas Second Court of Appeals. She resigned at the conclusion of her term on December 31, 2022.

Prior to her appointment, Barnes was a judge for the Denton County Court at Law No. 2, a position to which she was named in 2002.

Barnes earned a bachelor's degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1980. Then, in 1985, she completed a J.D. at Southern Methodist University, Dedman School of Law. She is Board Certified in Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

After graduating from law school, Barnes began her legal career as an assistant city attorney for the City of Lewisville in 1986. During this time, she also worked as an attorney in private practice. Thirteen years later, she was appointed associate judge of the Denton County Probate Court. She served in that capacity until 2002.

Her memberships have included the Texas Academy of Family Law Specialists, the Denton County Bar Association, the Arc of Denton County, and the Kiwanis Club of Denton. She has also been involved with the National Skeet Shooting Association.

She was named Volunteer of the Year (2009) by the Denton GOP and Judge Advocate of the Year by the Young Lawyers Section of the Denton County Bar Association.

Barnes was born in Detroit, Michigan. She has lived in Denton County since 1983. Barnes has cows and two Labradors.

She is registered as a Republican.
