Judge Kevin R. Bruning - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Kevin R. Bruning is a judge for the 12th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida in Manatee County. He joined the bench in January 2021.

The 12th Judicial Circuit includes DeSoto, Manatee, and Sarasota Counties. Bruning has held an assignment in the Circuit Family Division 3 in Manatee County.

Prior to beginning his judicial career, he was a managing partner at Bentley & Bruning, P.A., where his practice focused on complex commercial litigation involving real estate and business-related disputes. Before joining the firm, Bruning was a shareholder at Williams, Parker, Harrison, Dietz & Getzen (2000 to 2011). He also served as an appointed Guardian ad Litem for the 12th Judicial Circuit Court.

Bruning received a B.S. in journalism from the University of Florida (1994) and an M.B.A. from Rollins College (1996). He went on to complete a J.D. at Stetson University College of Law in 2000. While a law student, Bruning sat as the Digest Editor of the Stetson Law Review.

He was admitted to practice in Florida (2000), the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

He is a past president of the Sarasota County Bar Association, and he served as a board member of The Florida Bar Grievance Committee.

From a civic standpoint, Bruning has been involved with the Sarasota County Historic Preservation Board (chairman), the International Council of Shopping Centers (affiliate member), the American Red Cross of Southwest Florida (Chairman of the Board), and the Arcadia Rodeo Committee. He also provided pro bono counsel to several local organizations and coaches Little League baseball. Bruning is an Eagle Scout.

He was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, and moved to Orlando, Florida, when he was five. His father, a former Lieutenant Colonel in the JAG Corps, served as a federal judge in Vietnam and later became a federal prosecutor as well as general counsel for Lockheed Martin. Bruning resides in Sarasota with his wife, Nicole, and their two sons.
