Judge Julianne T. Capetola - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Julianne T. Capetola is a Justice of the Nassau County Supreme Court in the Tenth Judicial District of New York. She was elected to the Supreme Court bench in 2016.

Her judicial career began in 1998, when she was elected to serve as a judge for the Nassau County Family Court. She was then re-elected to the seat in 2008. While on the Family Court, Justice Capetola also served as an Acting Justice of the Nassau County Supreme Court.

She graduated summa cum laude with her B.A. from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She went on to earn her J.D. from St. John’s University Law School.

Capetola practiced as an associate at Marsha Edelman, Esq., Efman and Nailburg, and Tibby Blum, Esq. During her brief tenure at Tibby Blum, she also served as an editor for the West Publishing Company.

Then, in 1984, Capetola joined the New York State Unified Court System, working first as a law secretary for the Hon. Joseph Colby with the Nassau County Supreme Court until 1992, when she became the law secretary to the Hon. Edward J. Hart, also with the Supreme Court in Nassau County.

The following year, Capetola left the Court System to briefly serve as an associate at Meltzer, Lippe, Goldstein, Wolfe, Schlissel, and Sazer P.C. before returning to her position as law secretary in 1995, this time with the Hon. John E. Kingston with the Nassau County Supreme Court. A year later, she became a Nassau County Supreme Court matrimonial referee. She would hold that position until her election to the Family Court in 1998.

Her memberships have included the American Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, the Nassau County Bar Association, the Nassau County Lawyers Association, the Nassau County Jewish Lawyers Association, and the Nassau County Women’s Bar Association.

She was also the founding member of the Nassau County Courthouse Kiwanis as well as the Interdisciplinary Forum of Nassau County.

Capetola received the Fidelis Juri Award from the Uniformed Court Officers Fraternal Order of Court Officers.
