Judge Joelle Ann Ober - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Joelle Ann Ober (Ret.) served as a judge for the Hillsborough County Court in Florida. Ober was elected to the bench in 1996. She retired on August 31, 2021.

Over the course of her judicial career, Ober held assignments in the Civil, Criminal, Domestic Violence, and Traffic Divisions.

Ober attended the University of South Florida, where she received a B.A. in criminology in 1979. She went on to complete a J.D. at South Texas College of Law in 1983.

After graduating from law school, Ober spent time as an assistant state attorney and an assistant public defender in the 13th Judicial Circuit. Then, in 1993, she opened her own private practice as a sole practitioner. She worked in that capacity until her election to the bench.

Some of her memberships have included the Hillsborough County Bar Association, the Hillsborough Association of Women Lawyers, the Florida Association of Women Lawyers, the Florida Council of Domestic Violence Judges, the National Association of Women Judges, the Hillsborough Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the Bay Area Legal Services (volunteer). Ober also served on the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit Professionalism Committee.

From a civic standpoint, she has served as a volunteer for Big Brothers Big Sisters, and she was on the board of directors of the National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence, the Northside Mental Health Center, and the Spring of Tampa Bay.

Ober was born on Staten Island, New York.
