Judge James R. Adams - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. James R. Adams (Ret.) was a judge for the Lee County Court in the 20th Judicial Circuit of Florida. Adams joined the bench in 1993. He retired on June 11, 2021.

Prior to beginning his judicial career, Adams spent time as an attorney for the Lee County Port Authority (1990 to 1993). Before that, he was an assistant county attorney with the Lee County Attorney’s Office (1986 to 1990) and an assistant public defender with the Office of the Public Defender for the 20th Judicial Circuit (1982 to 1986).

He received a B.A. from the Hampton Institute in 1977. Adams went on to complete a J.D. at North Carolina Central University School of Law in 1982. He was admitted to practice in Florida in 1983.

His memberships have included the American Bar Association, the Lee County Bar Association, the National Bar Association (Southwest Florida Chapter), and the Caloosa American Inn of Court.

He also served on the Florida Bar Grievance Committee for the Twentieth Judicial Circuit and was chairman of the Arbitration Mediation Advisory Board. In addition, Adams sat on the Board of Trustees of Edison Community College and the Board of Directors of the Lee County YMCA and Habitat for Humanity (past president).

Adams was born in Miami, Florida.
