Biography

The Hon. James P. Nilon (Ret.) served as a judge for the 8th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. Nilon was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jeb Bush in 2005. He retired in 2020.


The 8th Judicial Circuit encompasses Alachua County, Baker County, Bradford County, Gilchrist County, Levy County, and Union County. Nilon presided over cases in the Juvenile Division and the Family Division.


Prior to his appointment, Nilon was a judge for the Alachua County Court, a position to which he was named in 2000. During this time, he served as administrative judge of the Criminal Division and presided over the Mental Health Court. Before that, he was Chief of the Felony Division of the Office of the State Attorney.


Nilon earned a B.S. in business administration from the University of Florida in 1970. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Florida, Fredric G. Levin College of Law (1972) and an M.B.A. from Indiana University (1984).


In 1986, shortly after graduating from law school, Nilon was hired as a staff attorney for the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. He worked in that capacity until 1988.


He is registered as a Democrat.
