Biography

The Hon. James A. Yancey is a judge for the 10th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jeb Bush on April 4, 2003.

The 10th Judicial Circuit encompasses Hardee County, Highlands County, and Polk County. Yancey has held assignments in Polk County, presiding over cases in the Civil Division.

Prior to his appointment, Yancey was a judge for the Polk County Court, a position to which he was named in 2000.

Yancey earned a B.A. in political science from the University of South Florida in 1981. He then completed a J.D. at Samford University, Cumberland School of Law, in 1984. As a law student, Yancey clerked in the Office of the State Attorney for the 6th Judicial Circuit (1983).

He is Board Certified in Marital and Family Law by the Florida Bar (1996).

After graduating from law school, Yancey began his legal career as an attorney in private practice, where he specialized in civil and family law matters. He started at Devane, Munson, Allen & Langston, eventually becoming a named partner in 1989. Then, in 1996, he opened his own private practice as a sole practitioner. Yancey supplemented his practice with service as a code enforcement hearing officer for Polk County (1994 to 1999).

His memberships have included the Willson American Inn of Court and the Lakeland Downtown Kiwanis Club. He has also served as a board member of the Girls Club of Lakeland as well as president of the Lakeland Bar Association.

Born and raised in Polk County, Yancey graduated from Lakeland Senior High School. His father, the late Quillian Yancey, served as a State Attorney in the Office of the State Attorney for the Tenth Judicial Circuit.
