Judge Frederick B. Tygart: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Frederick B. Tygart (Ret.) served as a judge for the 4th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. Tygart was appointed to the bench in 1987. He retired in 2011.


The 4th Judicial Circuit encompasses Clay County, Duval County, and Nassau County.


Prior to his appointment, Tygart was a partner at Sharp & Tygart, a law firm he joined in 1984. Before that, he spent time as a sole practitioner in his own private practice (1978 to 1984) and a partner at Tygart & Tygart (1974 to 1978). Tygart supplemented his practice with service as a member of the Florida House of Representatives, where he represented the 23rd District (1978 to 1982).


Tygart received a B.A. in English from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1967. He went on to earn a J.D. from the University of Florida, Fredric G. Levin College of Law, in 1970.


After graduating from law school, Tygart began his legal career as a staff attorney in the Florida Office of General Counsel. He served in that capacity for one year, eventually leaving to join the Office of the State Attorney for the 4th Judicial Circuit.


His memberships have included the Jacksonville Bar Association, the Florida Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers, and the Florida Conference of Circuit Judges.


He is a recipient of the Outstanding Merit Award from the Associated Self Insurers of Florida (1981).


Tygart is a veteran of the United States Army Reserve.
