Judge F. Alfonso Charles - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. F. Alfonso Charles is a judge for the 124th District Court of Texas in Gregg County. Charles was appointed to the bench by former Governor Rick Perry in 2009, filling a vacancy created by the passing of the Hon. Bill Jennings (deceased). He currently serves as the Chief Justice of the Tenth Administrative Judicial Region, a position to which he was appointed by Governor Greg Abbott in 2018.

Prior to his appointment, Charles served as a judge for the Gregg County Court at Law No. 2 as well as an assistant district attorney for the Gregg County District Attorney's Office.

Charles earned a B.A. in business and political science from Austin College. Then, in 1990, he completed a J.D. at Baylor University School of Law. He is Board Certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

His professional memberships have included the Texas Bar Association, the Texas Judicial Council, the Texas Task Force on Indigent Defense, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals Judicial Education Committee, and the Texas District and County Attorneys Association. He has also served as president of the Texas Association of County Court at Law Judges and the Gregg County Bar Association as well as a member of the Texas Center for the Judiciary Board of Directors.

In addition, Charles has served as vice president of the See-Saw Children's Place Board of Directors and president of Hearts Way Hospice. He has also been a member of the Longview Greggton Rotary.

He is registered as a Republican.
