Judge Edward C. Spaight - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Edward C. Spaight is a judge for the Citrus County Court in Florida. He was elected to the bench on November 8, 2022.

Prior to his election, Spaight was the chief assistant public defender in the Office of the Public Defender for the 5th Judicial Circuit in Citrus County, a position to which he was named in 2015. He joined the office as an assistant public defender in 2009.

Spaight earned a bachelor’s degree from Siena College in 1992. He spent the next several years working as a legislative associate for the New York State Senator Stephen M. Saland and a research specialist for the New York State Department of Labor (1996 to 2001) before completing a J.D. at Western New England College School of Law in 2001.

After graduating from law school, Spaight began his legal career as a judicial law clerk to the Maine Superior Court. He served in that capacity until 2002, at which time he entered into private practice at Vafiades, Brountas & Kominsky in Bangor, Maine.

His memberships have included the Citrus County Bar Association, the Penobscot County Bar Association, and the Inverness Rotary Club. He has also been involved with the Board of Directors of the Covenant Children’s Home, and he has served on the Citrus County Republican Executive Committee and the City of Brewer Planning Board.

He is a recipient of the Lew Vafiades Pro Bono Award from the Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project (2008).
