Judge Cynthia S. Oster - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Cynthia S. Oster is a judge for the Hillsborough County Court in Florida. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Rick Scott on November 27, 2017, filling a vacancy created by the elevation of the Hon. Jennifer X. Gabbard to the 13th Judicial Circuit Court.

Oster has held assignments in the Civil Division (2018 to 2020), the Traffic Division (2018 to 2020), and the Unified Family Court’s Juvenile Dependency Division (2020 to present).

Prior to her appointment, Oster was a senior assistant county attorney in the Employment and Regulatory Services Division of the Office of the Hillsborough County Attorney, a position she held for eighteen years. Before that, she spent time as an assistant state attorney in the Office of the State Attorney for the 13th Judicial Circuit (1997 to 2000) as well as an assistant public defender in the Office of the Public Defender for the 10th Judicial Circuit (1996 to 1997).

Oster earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida in 1992. She then completed a J.D. at Stetson University College of Law in 1995. She is Board Certified in City, County, and Local Government Law by the Florida Bar (2012).

Her memberships have included the Hillsborough County Bar Association, the Hillsborough Association for Women Lawyers, the Ferguson-White American Inn of Court, the George Edgecomb Bar Association, and the Bay Area Legal Services Pearl Society. She has also been involved with the Florida Second District Court of Appeal Judicial Nominating Commission, the Board of Directors of Tampa Connection, and the Grievance Committee of the Florida Bar.

She is a recipient of the Leaders in the Law Award from the Florida Association for Women Lawyers and the Professionalism Award from the Hillsborough Association for Women Lawyers.

Oster was a resident of Tampa, Florida, at the time of her appointment. She is a former Martial Arts Instructor and Fourth Degree Black Belt, training children and adults in Tae Kwon Do for over ten years.
