Biography

The Hon. Charles N. Prather (Ret.) served as a judge for the 9th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. Prather was appointed to the bench by former Governor Bob Martinez in 1990, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Cecil Brown. He retired in 2001 and continued to serve the court as a senior judge.


The 9th Judicial Circuit encompasses Osceola County and Orange County. Prather held assignments in Orange County, presiding over cases in the criminal Division and the Juvenile Division. He also sat as the Administrative Judge for Orange County (1987 to 1990).


Prior to his appointment, Prather was a judge for the Orange County Court, a position to which he was named in 1983. Before that, he spent time as the town attorney for the Town of Windermere (1975 to 1982) and the executive director of the Legal Aid Society of the Orange County Bar Association (1968 to 1970).


Prather earned a bachelor's degree from Stetson University in 1957. He then completed a J.D. at the Stetson University College of Law in 1963.


His memberships have included the Judicial Relations Committee, the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, the Orange County Correctional Planning Committee, the Criminal Rules and Law Committee of the Conference of County Court Judges, and the Criminal Law Committee of the Orange County Bar Association.


He is registered as a Republican.
