Judge Benjamin M. Bloom - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Benjamin M. Bloom is a judge for the 1st Judicial District Circuit Court of Oregon. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Ted Kulongoski on January 7, 2011, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Mark Schiveley.

The 1st Judicial District encompasses Jackson County.

Bloom earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Hamilton College in 1990. He then completed a J.D. at Lewis & Clark Law School in 1993. As a law student, Bloom clerked for the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon.

He is admitted to practice in Oregon (1993), the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit (1994), and the United States District Court for the District of Oregon (1993).

After graduating from law school, Bloom entered into private practice, working as an attorney at Hornecker, Cowling, Hassen & Heysell in Medford. During his tenure there, he specialized in professional negligence defense matters for physicians and lawyers, supplementing his practice with service as a judge pro tem for the Jackson County Circuit Court (2005 to 2010).

His memberships have included the Jackson County Bar Association and the Oregon Council on Court Procedures. He also sat on the Board of the Southern Oregon Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Board of Directors of the Greater Oregon Chapter of March of Dimes.

Raised in New Jersey, Bloom attended Cherry Hill High School East and has been involved with Temple Emek Shalom.
