Judge Andrew M. Engel: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Andrew M. Engel is a judge for the Nassau County District Court in the Tenth Judicial District of New York. He was originally elected to the District Court bench in 2007 and re-elected in 2013.


He is a registered Democrat.


Judge Engel graduated with his B.A. in political science from Rider College in 1976. He went on to earn his J.D. from Brooklyn Law School in 1979.


After graduating from law school, Engel entered into private practice. He first practiced as an associate at Mahler, Harris, and Engel P.C. from 1979 until 1994 when he was named a managing partner at the firm. During his twenty-five years of practice there, Engel specialized in personal injury, criminal, medical malpractice, divorce, landlord/tenant, estate, real estate, and commercial matters. While at the firm, Engel also served as a mediator for the New York State Supreme Court Appellate Division, Second Department and was a court examiner in guardianship proceedings for both Queens and New York Counties. Then, in 2005, he began working as a principal law clerk to the Hon. Elaine Jackson Stack with the Nassau County Supreme Court. Engel held that position until his election to the District Court.


In 2010, Judge Engel was elected to serve as the Dean of the Nassau Academy of Law, which serves as the educational branch of the Nassau County Bar Association. Before his election to the position, he had served as the Academy’s Assistant Dean.


He has served as the co-chair of We Care Fund, the charitable arm of the Nassau County Bar Association and was the past president of the Nassau County District Court Judges Association.


His other memberships have included the Community Relations and Public Education Committee, the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, the New York State Bar Association, the Brooklyn Law School Alumni Association, the Jewish Lawyers Association of Nassau County, and the Nassau County Women’s Bar Association.


Judge Engel was born in White Plains, New York, and at the time of his election to the bench, was residing in East Meadow, New York.
