The Hon. William P. Mahoney is a judge for the 29th Judicial District Court of Kansas. He was elected to the bench in 2010 and re-elected in 2014, 2018, and 2022.
The 29th Judicial District encompasses Wyandotte County. Over the course of his judicial career, Mahoney was selected to sit with the Kansas Supreme Court. He heard oral arguments and joined the justices in their deliberations and decision drafting.
Prior to his election, Mahoney operated his own private practice, the Mahoney Law Office in Kansas City. During his tenure there, he handled criminal, family, and probate matters alongside his father, the Hon. J. William Mahoney, until he passed away in 1995, at which time he became a sole practitioner.
Mahoney earned a bachelor’s degree in political science, journalism, and German from Texas Christian University in 1986. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Kansas School of Law in 1989. As a law student, he clerked for the Hon. Herbert Walton of the 10th Judicial District Court (1988 to 1989).
After graduating from law school, Mahoney began his legal career as a judge advocate for the Judge Advocate General’s Corps of the United States Navy. He served in that capacity until 1994, holding assignments at the Navy Legal Service Office in Philadelphia. He was tasked with preparing wills for Operation Desert Storm as well as prosecuting and defending sailors in Newfoundland, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey.
Mahoney was raised in Kansas City, Kansas, where he attended Bishop Ward High School.
He is registered as a Democrat.
