Prior to his election, Newman was a judge for the Madison County Superior Court. During his tenure there, the Indiana Commission on Judicial Qualifications filed charges against him in 2006. When not presiding over legal proceedings, Newman collects artwork. His mother, Helen, was a well-known local artist.
He is registered as a Democrat.
