The Hon. Steven R. Ebberts is a judge for the 3rd Judicial District Court of Kansas in Shawnee County. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Sam Brownback in 2011.
During his judicial tenure, Ebberts was appointed by the Kansas Supreme Court as Acting Chief Judge of the 3rd Judicial District in 2021 and was named Chief Judge of the Judicial District the following year.
Prior to his appointment, he was associated for eight years with the City of Topeka Municipal Court. During his time on the municipal bench, Ebberts served as chief and administrative judge, department director, and a former associate judge.
He was also a pro tem judge for the 3rd Judicial District and had worked as legal counsel in private, corporate, and governmental practice. This included stints in solo practice, as well as with the Kansas Insurance Department, the Fidelity Security Insurance Company, the Dodson Group, the Topeka City Attorney’s Office, and Blackwell Sanders Peper Martin.
Ebberts received a bachelor’s degree in communications from Washburn University. He then completed a J.D. at Washburn University School of Law in 1993.
His memberships include the Topeka Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Kansas District Judges Association, the Sunrise Optimist Club, the Topeka Lawyers Club, and the Kansas Bar Association. Ebberts has also been involved with the Topeka Kiwanis Club and was a past president of the Kansas Municipal Judges Association.
A married father of two children, he was born in Garden City, Kansas, and attended Burlington High School.
