The Hon. Kevin N. Berens is a judge for the 15th Judicial District Court of Kansas. He was elected to the bench in 2016.
The 15th Judicial District includes Cheyenne, Logan, Rawlins, Sheridan, Sherman, Thomas, and Wallace Counties.
Berens has served as Chief Judge of the 15th Judicial District since his appointment to the post by the Kansas Supreme Court in 2017.
His legal career included stints as the county attorney in Thomas and Cheyenne Counties, an assistant county attorney in Cheyenne County, and a city attorney in Bird City. Berens was also in private practice in both Kansas and Colorado, including at his own law firm, the Berens Law Firm, LTD (2011 to 2016), and James M. Milliken, Chtd. (1999 to 2011).
He received a B.B.A. in accounting from Fort Hays State University in 1992. Berens then worked as an accountant before completing a J.D. at Washburn University School of Law in 1999. While a law student, he completed a clerkship with the 3rd Judicial District Court in Topeka (1997 to 1999).
Berens was appointed by the Kansas Supreme Court to serve a three-year term as a member of the Access to Justice Committee in 2020.
He attended Colby High School.
Berens is registered as a Republican.
