The Hon. Helene F. Gugerty is an Acting Justice of the Nassau County Supreme Court in the Tenth Judicial District of New York. She was originally elected to serve as a judge for the Nassau County Court in 2013 and was promptly elevated to the Supreme Court that same year.
She is a registered Democrat.
Justice Gugerty graduated with a B.S. and a B.S.W. in social work from the State University of New York at Albany in 1985. She went on to earn her J.D. from St. John’s University School of Law in 1988.
After graduating from law school, Gugerty joined the Legal Aid Society in Queens County.
Then, in 1995, she entered into private practice, working as an attorney at the Law Office of Richard M. Gutierrez. During her tenure there, she handled criminal and civil litigation cases involving negligence, matrimonial, federal and civil rights, employment discrimination, property damage, and medical malpractice issues.
Gugerty left the firm in 2008 to join the New York State Unified Court System. During her tenure there, she served as a principal law clerk with the Nassau County Supreme Court. She remained in that capacity until her election to the County Court.
While on the bench, Justice Gugerty has presided on the Integrated Domestic Violence and Domestic Violence Courts.
Her memberships have included the Nassau County Bar Association, the Nassau County Women’s Bar Association, and the Jewish Lawyers Association of Nassau County. Justice Gugerty has also served as a Trustee of the Bayville Free Library.
She is a lifelong resident of Long Island, New York.
