The Hon. E. McRae Mathis (Ret.) served as a judge for the 4th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. Mathis was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jeb Bush in 1999, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Willard E. Parsons. He retired in 2014.
The 4th Judicial Circuit encompasses Clay County, Duval County, and Nassau County.
Mathis earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Memphis, Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, in 1974.
After graduating from law school, Mathis began his legal career as an assistant state attorney in the Office of the State Attorney for the 4th Judicial Circuit. He served in that capacity until his appointment to the bench, holding assignments as Special Assistant to the State Attorney (1989 to 1994) and Chief Assistant State Attorney (1994 to 1999).
