The Hon. David E. Carey is an associate judge for the Harford County District Court in Maryland. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Martin O’Malley on November 22, 2013, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. John L. Dunnigan.
Over the course of his judicial career, Carey has held assignments on the Court Technology Committee of the Maryland Judicial Council.
Carey earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the College of Wooster in 1986. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1989.
After graduating from law school, Carey began his legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. Robert J. Karwacki of the Maryland Court of Special Appeals. He served in that capacity until 1990, at which time he became an associate at Brown, Brown & Young. During his tenure there, Carey rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a partner in 2003. He supplemented his practice with service as the Town Attorney for Port Deposit (2011 to 2013).
His memberships have included the American Bar Association, the Maryland State Bar Association, the Cecil County Bar Association, the Harford County Bar Association, the Maryland Association for Justice, and the Maryland Criminal Defense Attorneys’ Association.
He has served on the Town of Bel Air Economic & Community Development Commission (1994 to 1997), the Bel Air-Forest Hill Community Planning Council (1995 to 1998), the Town of Bel Air Board of Commissioners (1997 to 2013), the Hartford County Futures Commission (1994 to 1995), the Harford County Housing & Community Development Commission (1998 to 2000), and the Board of Directors of the Harford Community Action Agency (2004 to 2008).
He is a recipient of the Certificate of Recognition from the Harford County Sheriff’s Office (1998).
Carey was born in Baltimore, Maryland.
